Letter Sending New Year's Greetings while under House Arrest

Manuscript document signed on behalf of the Queen (“Marie Antoinette") and countersigned, both signatures by her secretary Pierre Jean Baptiste Beaugeard, 1 page, folio, Paris, 31 January 1791, to her cousin, thanking him for his New Year greetings and assuring him of her affections. Dispatch slits, overall in very fine condition and with a scarce paper seal depicting Marie Antoinette’s coat of arms present to the lower left. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait "MARIE ANTOINETTE - JOSEPH. JEANNE (d'Autriche)...Gravé d'après un Dessin de Moreau)". Visible area of letter and portrait, each 8 x 12 inches (20.3 x 30.5), overall 21 x 16 inches (53.3 x 40.6). Unexamined out of frame, 2 inch tear to blank area visible, toning around the edges, else apparently fine, though would benefit from a fresh acid-free mat.  Read More...

Autograph Letter Signed regarding "Le Journal d'une femme de chambre"

ALS in French, signed “Bunuel” to French New Wave actor Andre Labarthe, sending him a copy of the script of his new film and inviting him to be one of the small group of friends to see the film for the first time. One page, 8.25 x 10.5 (21 x 27 cm), February 5, 1964. Translated in full: "I returned this morning from the Alps where I had been traveling for a few days, not for sport but to get over a bad cold. I have for your review a script of Journal.  I think the film could be ready to be seen next week. I will show it to five or six friends, including you two. I'll let you know a few days beforehand. It's for this reason that I'm giving you my script." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Bunuel's own hand, incorporating his name ("L. Original maquette for a baptismal certificate by the important painter, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. The design, in black ink and blue gouache surrounded by a red border, touched in white, features the name François and the baptismal date of May 26, 1937, surrounded by flowers and the words "Il n'est pas necessaire d'espérer pour entreprendre et de réussir pour persévérer" ("One need not hope in order to undertake something, nor succeed in order to persevere.") Together with an autograph letter signed ("Henri Matisse"), 1 p, 4to, Nice, February 8, 1938, to M. Prade[?], transmitting the maquette. An interesting autograph letter from the great Hungarian violinist, dedicatee of the Brahms, Dvorak and Bruch Concertos and many other works. 1 page, in English, dated Berlin, May 14th [no year]. In full: "Dear Sir, I don't think I ever touch the hair of the bow with my thumb; it perhaps depends on the length of the thumb if people do or not.
